1973 Gibson SG
Electric Guitar! The Year of Clapton's The Fool Guitar
1973 Gibson SG
As a young boy, I started my love of the guitar with a Fender Stratocaster.
While the Strat helped me learn to play and got me on my way in the music world, I was soon able to get my hands on a '73 Gibson SG.
A birthday present given to me by someone who knew my love of music, the '73 SG was such a beautiful guitar at first sight.
I soon picked it up and started rocking out and immediately fell in love.
The guitar felt like it had been designed to fit me perfectly and I have had it as a trusty companion ever since the day I first laid my hands on it ten years ago.
Needless to say, I have had some great success with my band, playing gigs all across the northeast.
The Gibson SG is one of the hottest sellers on ebay.
And for good reason....
It first hit the market in 1961, and sported a slimmer body than other Gibson's as well as a solid mahogany finish.
The SG's lightweight and smaller frame fared popular among artists who moved around stage while strumming away.
Many popular rock stars came to love the Gibson SG standard for this very reason.
The radical style of the SG standard made its popularity grow sharply, surpassing that of the old standard, the Les Paul.
Looking at an SG standard up close you will notice a black bat-wing pick guard and a smooth flat body.
The neck of this beautiful piece of craftsmanship was extended out three frets to make the guitar easier to play for both beginners and experts.
Gibson marketed the SG standard as the "fastest guitar in the world" due to its light weight, ease of use and solid build.
The guitar became very popular with all styles of player due to its flashy exterior and crisp sound.
A little known fact about the SG standard was that it was designed to be a slimmer version of the Les Paul, but Paul did not want his name attached to what he felt was a radical departure from the already popular Les Paul standard.
The 1973 Gibson SG is a rare find in excellent condition.
A sleek, sexy guitar that is coveted by the world's best players, you can expect to pay a couple of thousand dollars for a '73 SG in good condition.
As I mentioned above, the SG has been used by the world's greatest players, maybe the most popular being "Slowhand" Eric Clapton. Clapton adopted the SG as a member of cream and dubbed the colored wonder the "fool" because of the amazing paint job.
"The Fool" was purchased for half a million dollars and currently is part of a private collection.
Other legends that have used the SG are Black Sabbath, Metallica, Motohead, Elliot Easton of the Cards, Robby Krieger of the Doors, the Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia, Jimmy Hendrix and Angus Young of AC/DC.
Legendary Who guitarist Pete Townshend, Radiohead's Thom Yorke and System of a Down's Daron Malakian all have used the SG.
As evidenced by its stunning sound, beauty and plethora of legendary players who have used it, the Gibson SG is a guitar that has been time tested and produces some of the greatest music ever heard.
A true legend in its own regard, if you are looking for the best guitar to rock out on, look no further than the 1973 Gibson SG.
