Gibson SG 61 Reissue
Electric Guitar! With 57 Classic Humbucker Pickups
The Gibson SG 61 Reissue has a vintage sound that will impress you, but it wins the hearts of many electric guitar players because it falls into a unique category. It’s the guitar that players would most like to just prop in a corner and look at. It just looks right.
Sure, it sounds great. After all, it’s a Gibson, and it’s equipped with their ‘57 classic humbuckers at the neck and bridge. The sound comes through just like it would have in 1961 when SGs were a new concept in electric guitars. The solid mahogany body also gives it the distinctive SG resonance that you can’t get from chambered or hollow body guitars. But in this case, maybe it’s not really about the sound. It could, however be about the feel. The Gibson SG ‘61 Reissue model comes with the 1960s-era slim neck profile. No two necks are exactly the same because Gibson’s craftsmen hand shape each one, but the idea is simple. The neck is supposed to be thinner, easier to play and faster than just about any other neck. But truthfully, it’s not exactly about the feel either. Has anyone said anything about the way it looks? It just looks classic. It looks vintage. It looks like an SG. Simply put, it looks right. Stand this reissue model up on stage or over in a corner and have a look. You’ll see. It’s a classic design --classically executed. While every SG has a distinctive look, the ‘61 Reissue has what no one would argue is a timeless design. Maybe it’s the finish. Or it could be the look of those classic pickups. Or it could be the whole package. Of course, with a list price of $3,300, it ought to look nice. And it ought to be for more than looking at. Some reviewers say that when you get through admiring it, pairing it with a Marshall amp will allow you to hear this vintage-designed guitar as it was meant to be heard. Whatever amp you use, however, you’ll find that the hot sound is much bigger than you expect and is more unique that its modest list of differences from a regular SG Standard would suggest. Looking over the specs for the Gibson SG 61 Reissue model, it’s hard to see why anyone would pay the premium price Gibson wants for it. But have a look at one, then you’ll see. Play one, then you’ll know. The ‘61 Reissue model has to be seen and heard to be believed.
