Gibson SG Bass Guitar!

The SG Standard Bass!

The Gibson SG Bass Guitar available in Heritage Cherry.

Bass players who like the look of their guitar buddy’s SG can have the same look, feel and Gibson reliability for their bass.

There is a Gibson SG bass guitar, and it’s called the SG Standard Bass.

Gibson SG Bass Guitar

In the 1950s, Gibson only made one bass guitar, the EB0.

When Les Paul models underwent the radical transformation to the thinner, double-cutaway instruments that were eventually renamed the SG; the EB0 went along for the design ride, too.

Currently available, the Gibson SG Standard Bass is a recreation of that dual-pickup classic version.

And it’s still just as long. It measures a lengthy 30.5 inches.

This four-string bass comes with a three-way adjustable bridge that allows the player to adjust strings front, back and side to side.

This allows for a number of setup options and a variety of string gauges.

This bridge is anchored right in the body at three points, keeping it firmly in place.

Gibson says this bass guitar’s superior tone is due in part to its glued-on neck.

Gluing, they say, provides for wood-on-wood contact and no air space in the neck cavity.

That means improved tone over other methods of attachment.

The neck and body move as one, so playing sound smoother.

Loosening and misalignment is never a problem either.

As for the pickups, it’s a TB plus humbucker at the neck and an EB mini humbucker in the bridge.

The bridge pickup gives some mid-range to the neck pickup’s heavy, bottom sound.

A 20-fret rosewood fingerboard is also standard.

Gibson is banking on you liking their cherry finish.

The SG Standard Bass is only available in Heritage Cherry.

The price is steep but reasonable, by most accounts.

It lists for less than $2,500, and you can easily find it for even less than that.

Reviewers like the SG Bass because of its massive sound and predictable Gibson responses.

Some even like having a bass guitar that matches the lead, but that requires a lead guitarist who plays an SG as well.

Gibson and their low-end subsidiary Epiphone currently offer more than two-dozen bass guitars, so there are plenty of choices to consider when looking for the right bass for your gigs.

But only Gibson's SG bass guitar, the SG Standard Bass, offers its rich and bold sound along with the rich SG heritage.
