Eric Johnson Fender Stratocaster

Electric Guitar Strat Review

 Eric Johnson Fender Stratocaster

Reviews seem to all say the same thing about the Eric Johnson Fender Stratocaster: It has a Custom Shop look and feel with a mass-market price tag.

Serious musicians owe it to themselves to try an Eric Johnson model. You don’t have to be a fan of his music to be a fan of this electric guitar.

Introduced in 2005 with a maple neck, a rosewood version came to market in 2009.

The configuration is intended to mimic Johnson’s 1958 Strat, one of his favorite guitars.

Two of its most important features are a V-shaped neck that gently changes shape midway and a rewired middle pickup.

The neck’s V-shape goes from a shallow profile at the first fret to a much wider look and feel by the twelfth fret.

The middle pickup’s tone control is rewired over to the bridge pickup, something that works really well.

Why don’t Strats just come that way to begin with?

You get a darker and fuller tone with it set up this way, and why wouldn’t you want that?

The Eric Johnson Strat also has a vintage-type fretboard with edges that are gently rolled so it feels worn in from day one.

The colors are bold and interesting, too. Count a deep black, an amazingly bright red and a blonde-white among them.

Some colors are available only on this model, making EJs instantly recognizable to those in the know.

Overall, it is simply a nice guitar with Johnson’s fixes to standard Strat weaknesses already applied.

Usually, Fenders with this level of customization come out of the Custom Shop and have price tags to match the level of hand work that goes into them.

But the Eric Johnson Fender Stratocaster is a production model and has a price tag in line with other musician-inspired offerings.

Called “one of the most respected guitarists on the planet” by Guitar Player magazine, Eric Johnson is an Austin-based instrumental rocker known for incorporating bits of jazz, Gospel, New Age and country into his work.

It’s no wonder guitarists want to copy the configuration of a player who is so well respected.

In fact, guitar maker Martin has also produced an electric guitar model manufactured to Johnson’s unique specifications.

Whether you’re an Eric Johnson fan or just like how the modifications he uses make a Strat sound, there’s no reason to hesitate about the quality of an Eric Johnson Fender Strat.

No matter who you ask, you’ll hear that it is one of the best models Fender offers.
