Fender Amp Can!

15 Watt Portable Amp

Fender Amp Can

About the size of a one-gallon paint can, the Fender Amp Can is a battery-powered amplifier small enough and lightweight enough to be carried in a backpack.

Although it has been discontinued recently, lots of them are still available on the market used -- and replacement rechargeable batteries are still available new from Fender.

Whoa, though.

Did you ever think you’d see an amp review that started with the phrase “About the size of a one-gallon paint can…”?

The Amp Can is smaller than you may think if you haven’t seen one in person.

Featuring a single six-inch speaker in a cylindrical plastic case that looks very much like a paint can with an extra-large handle, The Amp Can puts out a respectable 15 watts of sound.

It weights only about 13 pounds, too, making it light enough that a reasonably fit player could carry it in a backpack to a street busking gig or out to a campfire in the woods.

And if you don’t turn the sound up all the way, its rechargeable battery can last several hours.

Once it won’t hold a charge anymore -- and you’re likely to get a bad battery if the one you buy has been used a lot -- a replacement battery from Fender or a third-party knockoff can put you back in business.

There are other battery-powered portable amps on the market, but the Amp Can from Fender was a respectable player in the field during its original production years.

While an electric guitar may be the first thing you think of to run through it, it also works especially well with wired-up acoustics.

It can handle a keyboard or a voice mic, too.

Its 15 watts of power may not be enough for most stage shows -- and the battery might not last long enough for a long set anyway -- but The Amp Can is a good way to get acceptable sound from your instrument on the go.

And unlike some other battery amps, a built in distortion channel makes it easy to rock with your electric guitar.

Or you can even use it to make your acoustic sound like a distorted electric.

It’s not the best distortion channel on the planet, but it offers an acceptable sound.

This amp is also rugged, with no corners to get banged and a black PVC covering to protect its speaker and solid-state circuits.

The Fender Amp Can goes wherever you need a sound boost.

It’s the little amp that can.
