Fender Bassman Amp!
Bassman TV Amplifier
The original Fender Bassman amp line was discontinued decades ago, but thanks to some reissue models and an abundance of these simple and useful bass guitar amplifiers on the used market , they’re far from forgotten. Introduced in 1952, the Bassman was intended for bass players, but it has found a following with other electric guitar players because of its clean, simple sound. It’s not unusual to see either kind of player using something from the Bassman line to amp up blues, country and rock and roll. The Bassman started out, however, as the sound source for the first mass-produced electric bass guitar, the Fender Precision Bass. Originally featuring just one speaker, a later version with four 10-inch speakers brought this amp into its own. By 1983, however, technology and tastes had moved on, and the Bassman disappeared, discontinued from the Fender line. It only took seven years for the name to return to the Fender lineup, though. In 1990, the ‘59 Bassman -- a reissue of the 1959 model 5F6A -- came on the market. Now, the slightly upgraded ‘59 Bassman LTD carries the name into the future . A lacquered tweed box and four 10-inch Jensen speakers give this model the look of the old one with an improvement in sound over the Eminence speakers previously used for the reissue model. The Bassman TV line, introduced in 2009, also provides assurance that the Bassman name won’t soon be forgotten. Once again, it features a tweed look and a TV-style front that mimics the look of televisions from the era. If you’re looking to save some money or to get a more authentic vintage experience, a check on eBay or other used and collectible musical instrument sites will probably find you listings for lots of Bassmans from past years. Just keep one thing in mind: As technology and tastes evolved between 1952 and 1983, so did the Bassman line. That means you’ll find tweed, blonde, blackface and silverface amps, all bearing Fender's Bassman amp name. Each features the technology and circuitry used in its era. Simply put, the Bassman name doesn’t apply to just one thing. It applies to a range of classic and reissue amps, most of which are trendsetting examples of just how much difference the right amp can make in the sound of a guitar. For bass players -- and maybe regular electric players too -- the Fender Bassman amp name is one you have to know.
