Fender Highway 1 Texas Telecaster!

Fender Highway One Texas Tele Guitar

Fender Highway 1 Texas Telecaster

There’s not much Texas to it, but the Fender Highway 1 Texas Telecaster is an all-American guy that will sing a vintage song for you if you let it.

With appeal for blues and country guitarists, the Fender Highway One Texas Telecaster was designed at the company’s facility in Scottsdale, Arizona and made in the United States -- specifically, at their Corona, California manufacturing plant.

Both are far from Texas, but the sound just might remind you of the Lone Star State when this model is in the right hands.

Features include a lightweight ash body, one-piece ‘52 maple neck with 12-inch radius, jumbo frets, vintage American hardware and a vintage-style string-though-body three-saddle bridge with brass barrels.

Unfortunately, it has been discontinued, so your best bet is to locate one used on eBay. Or try one of the other American-made models if you want something new -- like anything from the American Standard or American Deluxe lines.

The Fender Highway 1 Texas Telecaster does a good job creating its intended vintage vibe and tone. The company called this lived-in guitar “as familiar as your favorite chair”.

A master tone and volume control joins a retro three-way switch to complete the old-fashion playability of this model.

One reason this model isn’t still produced could be some perceived quality issues among some pickier buyers.

The finish on some Fender Highway 1 Texas Teles may not have been as good as it should have been -- and that’s something to watch for on the used market.

Some players report doing buffing work themselves to get it the level of shine they wanted.

The pickguard is another source of some problems.

A few players thought it was too thin and warped easily, but thin pickguards are a characteristic of the vintage models this one was trying to emulate.

Other buyers thought the rough, sharp edges on the pickguard should have been cleaned up better.

When buying a used Fender Highway 1 Texas Tele, expect that these problems may have been dealt with by the replacement of the pickguard or even some refinishing.

With a look and feel that seems like Texas even if the model’s design never had anything to do with the vibrant music scene of that state, the Fender Highway 1 Texas Tele left production at the company as quickly as a rabbit leaves the roadway when it sees a truck coming.

And as quick as the weather changes in Texas, you might just find you one used online. All you have to do, partner, is click through and try.
