There is no classic guitar that is such a vital part of rock and roll history as the Gibson Les Paul Sunburst.

It was introduced in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s, and has become the cornerstone of all the Gibson guitars.

There isn’t a single guitar that’s been replicated more than this classic.

The sunburst guitar has been made for decades, but those early ones were the ones that started it all, and very few changes have been made over the years.

This classic was designed after the Goldtop, and the cherry sunburst finish was the most significant change.

It became so popular that Gibson kept making them, and added that burst design to thousands of guitars of every model over the last half century.

The original Les Paul Sunbursts were made with a cherry sunburst, but the red in the color faded very easily.

If you are lucky enough to find a vintage sunburst LP, it will probably appear to be made of shades of honey and yellow, instead of the original red.

This isn’t an indication of a lesser quality instrument, or a fake.

In fact, if you find one that still has the red in the sunburst (especially on the top where the sunlight hits it primarily) be careful that it is not a replica.

All the LP Sunbursts featured a two-piece maple top, and the seam can be seen in the center.

Their electronics were much like the Goldtops that preceded them.

The Gibson Les Paul Sunburst guitar has been a favorite of some of the greatest guitarists out there.

It was popular because of the rich, resonant tone that the Gibson’s are well-known for, and for the versatility of the instrument.

The LP Sunburst was not only good for rock music, but sounded great in other genres as well.

The guitar spanned everything from hard rock and heavy metal, to blues and jazz, to the alternative and grunge music of more recent times.

This guitar has been seen on more famous stages than almost any other guitar, and certainly more than any other Gibson model.

Some of the musicians (today’s and days past) known for playing the Sunburst include:

  • Brad Whitford and Joe Perry of Aerosmith
  • Joe Walsh of the Eagles
  • Mick Taylor of the Rolling Stones
  • Slash of Guns N’ Roses (has his own signature model)
  • Jimmy Page
  • Paul McCartney
  • Paul Kossoff of Free
  • Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols
  • Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac
  • Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top
  • Eric Clapton (has his own signature model)
  • Jeff Beck
  • Duane Allman of the Allman Brothers
