Gibson SG Classic
Electric Guitar! With Harsh Growling P-90 Pickups This Baby Rocks!
Gibson SG ClassicThis Gibson is aimed squarely at the low-to-middle market in terms of price and toward the harder edge in terms of sound.
The SG Classic discontinued model is still available new in many guitar stores -- and that’s good news for some budget-minded, hard-rocking players.
When you can find the Gibson SG Classic Electric Guitar with P-90 Pickups -- and it isn’t that hard to do at the moment -- you may be blown away by the less-than-a-grand price tag.
Introduced in 1999, SG Classics are less expensive than the Standard and have a few more features and embellishments than the currently available SG Special.
Today, however, Classics have a street price under $1,000, making them less expensive than most Specials.
Classics are also considerably higher-end than the faded-series guitars from Gibson but have prices that compete nicely with them.
The high gloss finish makes Classics look much more expensive than they are -- but the finish isn’t the reason so many players fall in love with the SG Classic.
It’s that harsh and growling sound from the P-90 pickups.
They’re the secret weapon of this model, according to some reviewers.
The idea was to recreate the sound and look of some of the influential guitar configurations in the United States and Britain during the psychedelic area.
Most reviewers think Gibson got it right on both counts.
The body is all mahogany, the pickups are P-90s, the fretboard is bound rosewood and there are simple dot inlays like just like the Special.
There’s no tremolo, and you don’t get the ABR-1 bridge.
The tuners aren’t Gibson’s best either.
Still, you’re essentially getting an SG Standard with fancier pickups and without the trapezoid inlays -- with a price that’s more like lower-end models.
Are you beginning to see why Gibson discontinued the model?
By all accounts, its highly polished finish, mid-range embellishments and superior sound make it too much guitar for the modest price.
And there might still be a few left at your neighborhood guitar store. There are certainly plenty left online.
It’s hard to imagine why so many are left around if they’re this good a deal, but never mind that.
There are still some left -- and that means you can have one.
If you want more guitar than your money deserves and you like a harsh, bold sound, grab Gibson's SG Classic.
You’ll get your money’s worth and more.
