Gibson SG Junior!
Electric Guitar Photo & Review
Gibson SG JuniorThere is nothing small about the Gibson SG Junior…the name has nothing to do with the size of the guitar, or the quality of sound it can put out there.
The Junior was made for people who wanted a real Gibson, but didn’t have unlimited funds or a car to trade in on a guitar.
Gibson has always put out great, high quality instruments, and they are expensive.
They were as aware of this as their customers who bought them…and in 1954; they realized that they were losing a lot of sales because people just couldn’t pay the outrageous prices to own them.
Gibson didn’t want to give up their status, meaning that just dropping their prices down to what everyone could afford was out of the question.
Part of what made them special was exclusivity, but they still wanted a part of that lower-end pie.
Therefore, the Gibson Les Paul Junior was born.
These were “student models” of the higher priced Les Pauls.
They were solid body guitars that featured a single pickup and a simple stop tailpiece.
They had standard sunburst finishes
and dot inlays.
The Juniors were well-made, Gibson wouldn’t lower themselves to put out cheap crap, but they were made with less expensive materials and sold at lower prices.
From 1954 to 1958, the Les Paul Junior was a single cutaway guitar, and they changed to a double cutaway style in ’58.
They also introduced two new finishes…a bright red and a yellow, in addition to the traditional sunburst.
In 1961, the guitar was renamed the Gibson Les Paul SG Junior, in deference to the popular new SG models of guitars that were coming off the line.
Then later, in 1966, they dropped Les Paul from the title and the logo on the headstock and Gibson's SG Junior was born.
This was when a whole new range of color options was also brought in.
Now the Gibson Junior has many different options of colors and body styles (single and double cutaway models are available, as well as the horned SG style).
