Waylon Jennings Telecaster!

Fender Tele Guitar!

Waylon Jennings Telecaster

Made from the mid-1990s until 2003, the Fender Waylon Jennings Tele paid tribute to one of country music’s most famous Tele players.

And while the model had a retail price of almost $5,000 when it was new, Waylon Jennings Tele listings on eBay and other online marketplaces are often relatively good deals today.

The Tribute Series model recreated the flower-patterned 1963 Telecaster with white rose inlay that became famous along with Jennings.

The original Jennings guitar was covered with white and black leather carved in an oak-lead and floral motif.

Born in 1937, Jennings became famous playing bass for Buddy Holly after the breakup of The Crickets.

And the singer was also famous for escaping death when Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson died in a 1959 plane crash. Jennings gave up his seat to Richardson.

Jennings died in 2002 as one of the biggest names in country music.

The Telecaster was carefully crafted in the Fender Custom Shop. Of course, it was black.

It featured a bound top and back, a slim profile ash body, a maple fingerboard with a “flying W” inlay at the 12th fret, a Scruggs tuner on the low E, leather inlays and chrome hardware.

To complete the package, it came new with a tweed case, strap and cable.

The Waylon Jennings Tele is just one of many models crafted in the Fender Custom Shop to match every detail of an artist’s original instrument.

The Custom Shop handles items that need more hand work than an assembly line can manage.

These tribute models have honored some of country’s biggest names -- and lots of blues and rock players, too.

While these Custom Shop models often come with high retail prices, they sometimes don’t rise in value after they’re discontinued as other collectible items do.

That means you may be able to find them used -- and still in nice condition -- for a good price.

It’s a bit of a treasure hunt to find the perfect item from the perfect seller, but it’s worth the effort.

If you just want something to play, however, new Telecasters, like the reasonably priced Standard Tele, would be a better choice.

There’s no reason to invest in a tribute model unless you have a strong desire for the look of the instrument or a connection with the music of the artist who inspired it.

If you’re going to buy a tribute model, however, the Waylon Jennings Tele is a beautiful and unique example of what Fender can do -- and there’s no better time to start your search than now.
